The State is distracted driving for a good reason. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, the United States accidents involving distracted drivers killed nearly 5,500 people and wounded about 448 000 more in 2009. More than distracted NHTSA died driving reports in 2009 accounted for 16% of all car accident victims this year.

Effectiveness of hand-held cellphone bans

A study conducted by the Office of road safety of California found the number of car accidents resulting in injuries and deaths fell after the implementation of a global ban on the use of the drivers of mobile phones. According to the study, total-car accident victims has fallen 22% after the implementation of the ban, but died in accidents related to the use of cell phones has fallen by 50%, stltoday.com reports.

However, not everyone agrees with the assessment that distracted driving laws correspond to the prevention of car accidents.

"The expectation would be that as cell phone use has skyrocketed in we would see a correlation between the number of accidents, but that did not place,"Jonathan Adkins of Governors Highway Safety Association or GHSA, was cited in an article in the Chicago Tribune saying."."

A study by Saurabh Bhargava, of the University of Chicago and Vikram Pathania of the London School of Economics, supports the claim of Mr. Adkins. Looking at the number of calls made just before and after the time when the cell rate becomes cheaper, the study revealed that call volumes increased 7% after 9: 00 am, but did not find a corresponding increase in the rate of car accident.
