In what officials have announced as an additional effort to crack down on the possession of drugs and traffic in Ohio, State legislators proposed a Bill which would impose criminal penalties for possession of a vehicle with a hidden compartment.
Details of the Bill
The Bill would "design, construction, construction, manufacturing, amend or modify a vehicle to create or add a hidden compartment" illegal, if the person knew or had reason to believe that a person will use the vehicle for criminal purposes.
In addition, the Bill would also "use, possessing or using" a vehicle with an illegal to compartment hidden, if the person knew or had reason to believe the vehicle was used to help commit a crime.
One of the ways of the Bill defines hidden compartment is "any compartment, space, box or other container closed which is added or attached to existing, spaces, compartments, or closed containers integrated or attached to a vehicle." Prohibited Bill also false or modified the tanks of fuel to any original equipment for the manufacture of vehicles that someone has "modified to conceal, hide, or preventing the discovery of the contents of the modified material."
The Bill is currently awaiting a hearing before the Judicial Committee of the Senate.
Penalties for Violations
Violation of the proposed law would be a crime of fourth level. Penalties for conviction under the Act are the following:
-A 18-month maximum prison penalty
-A fine up to $5,000
